WAR WOLF – “Crushing The Ways Of The Old”

WarWolfAs you may have gathered I love going to gigs, one of those many reasons is the ability to discover new and exciting bands I normally wouldn’t give the time of day to.  In this instance an Iron Witch show switched me on the aggressive Crust Punk of Brighton’s War Wolf.

Despite only forming in September 2012, they have been busy bees having already released a Split EP with Sob Story and their own “Riding With Demons EP”, and now in our hands we have début album “Crushing The Ways Of The Old”. Continue reading

RANNOCH – “Between Two Worlds”

Rannoch13It was clear from the outset that Rannoch were worthy of our collective attention in 2008 when they released their début EP, “Talamh Màthair”.  The release displayed ability, confidence and promise in abundance, shining their light forwards and hinting at what may come from putting their own stamp of Extreme Progressive Metal.

Some time passed with little heard from the band, save for electric and acoustic appearances at Bloodstock Open Air in 2011 which tempted more people in to their charms.  Now some five years after the début EP, courtesy of London’s Eulogy Media, we finally have the release of the first full length album and it they build on the solid foundations of the earlier work to achieve a powerful and diverse release. NMA Aberdeen 12112013The first and Northernmost night of the UK Tour, Bradford’s New Model Army thrill Aberdeen in support of their latest highly acclaimed album, “Between Dog And Wolf”.

AMIENSUS & OAK PANTHEON – “Gathering” (Split)

AmiOakIf I could have picked two US Metal bands to collaborate for a limited split EP, then Tridroid Records had been reading my mind and have released my dream EP this year, giving the label a further tentative step into the world of CDs.  In keeping with their model, this EP is available for free download to anyone that wants it, but I think it is safe to say that the CD will sell out rapidly. Continue reading

WET NUNS – “Wet Nuns”

WetNunsSometimes it’s all luck in the timing, initially dismissing the band due to the attention seeking name however a video for Heavens Below appeared during a YouTube surf session, pleasantly surprised by the Stoner Rock Riffage I booked a ticket to see Wet Nuns‘ debut album release show after which they promptly disbanded! Continue reading

BEAST – “Dead Or Alive”

Beast DOAFrom the same Youtube Surfing session that led me to Wet Nuns also led me to these Swedes, although in a roundabout way, the song is question was “Needle Fever” by The Horsehead Union, a great retro rock anthem to tattooing that was greatly enhanced by the guest female vocalist.

Suitably impressed by her my research led me to discover her day job band: Beast. Continue reading

NORDIC GIANTS – Live @ The Lexington, London (01/10/2013)

NordicAnd now for something completely different.

“Cinematic Ambient Soundscape” is not a style I would normally follow but when the live performance is this good…

A discovery made when they initially supported God Is An Astronaut a few years back and then intrigued sufficiently to watch Nordic Giants at ArcTanGent Festival were they blew me (and everyone else) away with an amazing performance, so here I was again in London for the EP release show “Build Seas, Dismantle Suns”. Continue reading

IN SOLITUDE – “Sister”

InSolMuch has been made, apparently, in the Metal media regarding the possibility that members of In Solitude are involved in the Ghost project.  This by passed me at the time but on the first listen to “Sister” I did immediately think it sounded a little like them and The Devils Blood from Holland. Whatever the truth of it, I couldn’t give a toss frankly, but this is most certainly a step over to the Occult Rock / Metal world for these ambitious young Swedes. Continue reading
